How to Check if the CRA Owes You Money: Unclaimed Cheque Guide

Official Steps to Locate and Claim Outstanding Government Payments

As of 2026, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) holds over 10.7 million uncashed cheques, totaling more than $1.87 billion in unclaimed funds. These payments, which include tax refunds, GST/HST credits, and various government benefit cheques, do not expire. If you believe you have missed a payment, you can reclaim it by following these official procedures.

How to Check and Claim Your Missing Payments

Follow these four steps to determine if the government is holding funds in your name.

1. Check via CRA My Account

The fastest and most efficient way to verify uncashed cheques is through your CRA My Account.

  • Log in to the portal.
  • Navigate to the “Overview” page or the “Accounts and Payments” section.
  • Look for the “Uncashed cheques” link. This tool displays personal cheques that are more than six months old.

2. Contact the CRA Directly

If you do not have an online account, or if you are searching for business/trust cheques or payments newer than six months, you must call the CRA:

  • Individual Enquiries Line: 1-800-959-8281.
  • A representative can confirm if you have outstanding payments and provide the necessary documentation to initiate a claim.

3. Submit the Required Documentation

Once you confirm an uncashed cheque exists:

  • Download Form PWGSC 535 (Undertaking and Indemnity) for each missing payment.
  • Complete and sign the form by hand.
  • Submit the form via the “Submit documents” feature in your CRA My Account or mail it to the designated Sudbury tax centre.
  • Note: If you have outstanding tax debt, the CRA may offset the balance against your unclaimed funds.

4. Prevent Future Missing Payments

To ensure you receive all future benefits and refunds without delay:

  • Enroll in Direct Deposit: This is the most secure method to receive payments directly into your bank account.
  • You can set this up through your CRA My Account, your financial institution, or during the tax filing process via certified software.
Important Security Warning: The CRA will never text or email you links to “claim a refund” or request your banking details through such channels. Any message asking for an immediate click-through to receive funds is a scam. Always access your information directly through the official CRA website.
